We celebrated the summer term with a community lunch today including food produced from the community allotment. We raised £88 in the raffle, thank you to everyone who purchsed tickets. We also launched the Time Bank which has been funded by Nechells Community First and will enable local resident to trade services with each other such as sewing or home maintenance. Our local residents were joined by colleagues from West Midlands Fire Service and West Midlands Nechells Community Police and our celebrity visitor was Steve Smallman who is a local author and illustrator. Steve came into the POD to individually sign all 161 copies of his book Dragon Stew which is the last book that children in year one at our local schools will receive as part of the Bookshare project which has been sponsored by Smurfit Kappa Foundation. The project which started in September 2013 has given the pupils a book every month to build into their own mini library. There will be a celebration of the Bookshare Project at Heartlands Academy next Thursday when all the year ones and their parents will be able to meet Steve and representatives of the Smurfit Kappa Foundation and share and celebrate the joy that this project has given to our year one children. Based on the success of the project the Smurfit Kappa foundation has funded the project for a further year and also extended the funding to allow pupils in year seven at Heartland Academy to also have a book a month over the next 11 months and the foundation have also funded a new library for Nechells Academy. We would like to thank Smurfit Kappa SKK for their support to enhance the lives of our children in Nechells.
