The final session in the Maths Master Class hosted by Heartlands Academy took place today. The Children extended their mathematical skills using weights and measures to make fruit smoothies in the wonderful food technology suite. Year 6 pupils from Cromwell, St Joseph’s, Nechells, St Clement’s and St Vincent’s have been visiting the Academy to develop their knowledge and understanding of maths and learn new skills. Heartlands have produced the following report for inclusion in the next edition of the POD Post:
This Spring Term, 20 trailblazing Year 6 pupils from 5 Nechells Primary Schools have been demonstrating their mathematical prowess at Heartlands Academy. Each ‘Mathster Class’ has sought to engage the pupils in practical and challenging aspects of mathematics they would not normally cover until Secondary School.
The pupils have been outstanding in demonstrating their mathematical curiosity and determination, rising to every challenge thrown at them. They have mastered skills as diverse as summing an arithmetic series (as featured on the A Level syllabus!), interpreting complex infographics, and solving 3D mazes. As if that wasn’t enough, the pupils have also been learning mindboggling ‘Mathemagic Tricks’ to astound their friends and family.
Across the four sessions the main focus has been a smoothie project based on a Bowland Maths activity. The pupils were tasked with the ambitious mission of conducting market research and using the data to inform the creation of their own brand of smoothie.
As part of the process, the pupils experienced some very practical applications of mathematics with the help of the Design Technology department at Heartlands Academy. Mr. Vardy allowed the pupils to take over his computers and laser cutter to design and produce the smoothie carton nets, and Mrs. Salter helped bring the project to life in her food technology room. Keep your eyes peeled for Smoothie Love, available in Banana Berries and Kiwi Apple flavours, in a shop near you soon!
